Who was this “honest” man who was such an “idealist”? He was Sam Baron, an avowed Socialist I had threatened to fire as a field director in the Teamsters’ warehouse division because of alcoholism. Baron had been one of those who opposed my election to the general presidency. So it is highly questionable in my mind whether he went to Kennedy or whether Kennedy went to him.

Life’s managing editor obviously took the bait because there was another confidential memo to him from Suydam a few days later which said:

I told Kennedy of your interest and he is delighted. He makes the suggestion that the piece go into Baron’s background and philosophy somewhat, to help explain his disgust with Hoffa and his motivation for breaking with the Teamsters. Kennedy believes deeply that this is not a case of “sour grapes,” but of a man acting out of conscience and principle. Kennedy thinks the break will be understood in light of his total life in the labor movement.
